چکیده

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Cryogen spray cooling (CSC) is used for epidermal protection during laser dermatologic surgery. However, further research is necessary to optimize the use of CSC for many applications, particularly in patients with darker skin types, and in procedures with deep-targeted chromophores. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS With the objective to enhance cryogen spray atomization and introduce a passive mass deposition control, stainless steel wire meshes of various sizes were positioned in the spray path of two nozzles of different diameters (0.7 and 1.4 mm). A temperature sensor placed at a fixed distance below the nozzle tips measured variations in temperature as a function of time. Calculations for heat flux (q), and overall heat extraction (Q) were done through an inverse heat conduction problem (IHCP) algorithm. RESULTS The use of wire meshes reduced maximum q and thus cooling efficiency for both nozzles. However, for the larger diameter nozzle (1.4 mm), cooling duration was prolonged significantly when compared to the case without mesh, which led to an increase in Q. CONCLUSIONS Wire meshes, within the range of wire diameters used, are not desirable for use with the smaller diameter nozzle because they reduce cooling efficiency. For the larger diameter nozzle, however, the prolonged cooling duration and increase in Q may be beneficial for laser dermatological procedures directed towards deeper targeted chromophores, such as hair removal.

Uniform Heat Transfer of Medical Cryogen Sprays through Wire Meshes

Cryogen spray cooling (CSC) protects the epidermal layer during dermatologic laser surgery (DLS) of superficial vascular lesions. Because of spray characteristics the protection provided radially is relatively uniform only by the spray axis. The present work explores mass-deposition passive-control during CSC in order to increase the radial homogeneity of heat extraction. A stainless steel mesh...

Effects of a Wire Mesh on Droplet Size and Velocity Distributions of Cryogenic Sprays

Cryogen spray cooling allows removing large amounts of heat in short periods of time. Previous investigations have shown that stainless steel wire meshes placed between spray nozzle and target surfaces effectively increase uniformity in lateral heat extraction while reducing cooling efficiency. In this study we used phase Doppler particle analysis to assess the effect of a wire mesh on the diam...

Influence of Cryogen Spray Cooling Parameters on the Heat Extraction Rate from a Sprayed Surface

Cryogen spray cooling is used to prevent epidermal thermal damage during port-wine stain laser therapy, despite the limited understanding of the fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer characteristics of cryogen sprays. In recent studies, it has been suggested that the heat flux through human skin could be increased by changing physical parameters such as nozzle-to-skin distance, nozz...

Correlations between Spray Properties and Heat Transfer Dynamics during Cryogen Spray Cooling

INTRODUCTION Cryogen spray cooling (CSC) has been used along with pulsed lasers for nearly a decade to irreversibly photocoagulate a variety of vascular lesions. However, the fundamental mechanisms that take place at the skin surface are still incompletely understood. In this work, we built a fast-response temperature sensor with the objective to determine the time in which liquid cryogen remai...

Dynamics of cryogen deposition relative to heat extraction rate during cryogen spray cooling

Goal is to investigate how delivery nozzle design influences the cooling rate of cryogen spray as used in skin laser treatments. Cryogen was sprayed through nozzles that consist of metal tubes with either a narrow or wide diameter and two different lengths. Fast-flashlamp photography showed that the wide nozzles, in particular the long wide one, produced a cryogen jet (very small spray cone ang...
